Give us this day and this shirt...

Was at Greenbelt earlier for dinner and when I passed by the Nike store, I couldn't help but be drawn to the huge "Give us this day" photo. Whoever is behind that project, wooohooo! It's great! However, I was more drawn to the shirt. Augh! I've been going through a "shirt" phase lately and the Nike shirt above is now on my "wanted" list. Hehe!

Aside from the NIke shirt, I also saw the Rhett Eala's My Pilipinas Series shirt for Collezione when I had dinner with Noreen last weekend, and I'm very much liking the polo shirt with an embroidered Philippine map... in white please. Hehehe!

The people that make the trip memorable...

Getting ready for Sentosa with Lloyd.

Pahinungod invades SG! Hanging out with Joi and Jean.

Starbucks with OFW goddess Rej. Hahaha!

CS proves it's a small world. With JB CSers Marco and Alan.

Late dinner at Jalan Alor with (from top left) CK my super nice host, Joey, Jon and Sabiqa

One of the reasons that really made me push for the Singapore trip was Richie offering his place for me to stay.Knowing that Richie would put me up at his place was one reason I went ahead and booked a ticket. The schedule that I got was also good because I got to celebrate his birthday with him. He had a special birthday I think. A music icon flew all the way from Down Under just to perform for Richie's birthday. Hehe! (Kylie had a concert on Nov. 25.) Then, Mrs. V cooked a super, super yum dinner of seafood for us and I can't believe that we finished everything. Hahaha! Friend, thank you, thank you super for having me at your place. Hope to see you again soon.

Then, there's Jean and Joi - friends from Pahinungod. Both are in SG in search of greener pastures, so to speak. Without them, I would be lost around SG and I have no photos to prove that I was indeed in SG. Hehe! Thank you for putting up with your camwhore friend.

I was also really happy because I got to hang out with Rej and Lloyd - friends I made while in my present workplace. I have to thank Lloyd for the Sentosa treat and Rej for the Starbucks treat. Hehe! Too bad I didn't get to see my other former colleague from Smart, Joann.

Then in KL, there are the couchsurfers who made the KL trip much more memorable. To be thanked first and foremost is CK - for the kindness and for accepting a stranger into his nice, warm home. Then there's Sabiqa, Joey and Jon who I got to hang out with during the dinner. And also Leeping and Alex, who I didn't get to meet but still "welcomed" me to KL.

And even on the flight back to Manila, I made new friends through couchsurfers Alan, Marco and Ivy from Johor Bahru. It was great to have met you guys.

So more than the places, more than the shopping, what really made the trip to SG and KL memorable were the company of people who have been friends for so long and those whom I have just met. Thank you all!

Fun >24 hours in KL thanks to KL CSers...

Alright, here's a little sharing about the SG-KL-SG trip for other travelers who'd like to do the same. When I was Googling about how to do this trip, I only found general trips like what buses are available, what sights to see. So I thought I'd share how it went for me.

At first, I was a bit hesitant about going because I was will be on my own, but in the end I just decided I had to do it and so I pushed through with the trip. Besides, back in my Pahinungod days, I would go to places where the language is different and I wouldn't have a clue about the locality but I'd still go home in one piece. I said to myself that KL is just the same except that one needed to have a passport. Haha! Anyway...

There are buses from Singapore that go to KL. Fare price varies. The one I got was First Coach, which had a round trip fare of S$55, which for me is already quite affordable. There's another one, Aeroline, which costs around RM110 for one way. I'm not sure what you get with that, but with First Coach, you get reclining seats, one free bottled water and a small snack. There are only three seats per row, which gives everyone enough personal space. Some seats have a power socket so you can charge your phone or camera battery or use your laptop, perhaps, on the road. That was already a good deal for me.

The terminal in SG is in Novena Square, while the terminal in KL is in Bangsar. Both locations were ideal because they were right next to an MRT station. In Bangsar, there's a nearby Maybank where you can have your money exchanged. From Bangsar, one can take an MRT to KL Sentral. I took awhile trying to study the train system. It's a bit confusing, especially if you've been so used to the MRT system in Singapore. I got a stored value ticket for RM10. It was good enough until I left for SG the following day.

From KL Sentral, I took an MRT to Masjid Jamek, where Merdeka Square was. A little more walking took me to the Royal Selangor Club and further walking brought me to Masjid India. Then I took the train back to the KL Sentral where I switched trains to visit the Old Railway Station. Aside from seeing the old train station, right behind it was the KTM Berhad, headquarters of the KTM system. Right next to it was the National Mosque. There's a sign that shows the way to the Butterfly Park and parks but I decided to skip it. I took the train back to KL Sentral and took the line that brought me to KLCC where Petronas was.

The landmarks I decided to visit are nearby train stations. Because I would be in KL for less than 24 hours, there was no point wasting time getting lost because I got on a wrong bus or because a cab driver was giving me an unnecessary long ride.

Anyway, since it was already late afternoon, I knew I wouldn't be able to get a ticket to the Skybridge. So what was left to do was take photos of the great twin structures. Tickets to the Skybridge were distributed as early as 8AM, so that's what I did the following day. The Skybridge Visit center is one level below the ground floor of the Petronas main lobby. When I got there, many visitors were already in line. The tickets were distributed by 830. Only 20 persons per group, and each group is given only 10 minutes at the Skybridge. Personally, I didn't find anything spectacular while I was up there. I went there for the photo op and that was it. What was really to be admired is the architecture, which obviously could only be seen from the outside. If the towers were beautiful in daytime, they are even more fantastic at night. I just didn't get to take a photo of the twin towers but I will always remember how the structures glowed in the dark of the night.

After the Petronas Skybridge visit, I went to the nearby KLCC Aquaria. For RM38, you get to see KL's own version of Manila Ocean Park. I thought it was a huge place, but I finished it in a little over an hour. So for the price I paid, I guess it was already good. I particularly enjoyed the underwater tunnel. The rest of the time was spent walking around KLCC Suria, KL's premiere shopping center. There's a little bit of everything for everyone - Chanel to CK, Louis Vuitton to Philosophy. I also went to the Petronas Art Gallery where portraits taken by a local artist were on display. There is a food court that offers a wide range of cuisine for a reasonable price.

My bus going back to SG was scheduled to leave at 230PM, and with nothing more to do plus I wanted to avoid the humid weather, I headed for the First Coach bus terminal in Bangsar. It was a nice terminal because there was a waiting lounge with AC, clean restrooms, free Internet, free power sockets, and free drinks choice of coffee, tea or hot choco. This time, I bough the headsets for just RM5 and I got a solo seat. So on the way back to SG, I watched The Holiday and The Devil Wears Prada.

My total budget for the entire trip was US$50. Not bad I think. I got some small magnets and postcards as souvenirs. And I even kept about RM20 as an additional souvenir.

The highlight of the trip, aside from the Petronas visit, was the dinner with couchsurfers. My host was CK, and we had dinner at Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang with other couchsurfers Sabiqa, Joey and Jon. When you're traveling alone in a city, it's great to know that you can have some friends thanks to couchsurfing. Two other couchsurfers - Leeping and Alex - were also planning to meet up with me but it didn't push through because both were busy with work.

I am really grateful to CK for letting me stay at his nice place for the night. It was my first couchsurfing experience, and I'm really glad that I got to stay with a very wonderful host. To show my gratitude, I gave him a keychain from Team Manila and a Couchsurfing Philippines shirt, which I think he both liked.

Thank you very much, CK and KL CS, for making my KL trip super memorable.

Reminded that shopping is fun... Haha

While planning for the Singapore trip, the only shopping I was thinking of was for souvenirs. After all, the reason why I travel is to go sightseeing and experiencing the local culture as much as I could.. or so I thought.

But alas, on my last day in Singapore, I ended up spending. (Although, technically, it started a day before at Ikea and Muji.) After visiting shops with Mon and Richie at Orchard the previous day, I knew I would be buying stuff. Haha! Hence, the last day in SG was spent doing some shopping. Eeep! Shopping day started at Heeren where a branch of cool store New Urban Male (NUM) and HMV were.

From there, it was down to more shops that lined Orchard. First stop again was Paragon for the little things at Muji again, followed by Lucky Plaza where I got Singapore souvenirs and some shirts for my brothers and my Dad. Then off to Kinokuniya at Takashimaya where I got an issue of VMAN. Yahooo! I"m still bummed out though that they don't have the Chace issue yet. Borders didn't have VMAN either. Sigh.

Afterwards, headed to Tangs where I got my Mom a small bag. The final store we visited was the NUM in Wheelock, where I ended up getting more than I planned for. Eeep! Haha! Originally, I just wanted to get one shirt and the really cute rainbow bear. I took home some shirts and a nice, little rainbow bear. The shirts for S$50 I think are quite expensive but I still bought them just because. Haha! And they're way cheaper compared to the Lanvin and Etros that Mon got. Hehehe!

Haha! I haven't gone shopping for quite some time so it was great doing it in Singapore. I was reminded of how relaxing and fun that activity is. Haha! I would love to go back perhaps next year to experience the Great Singapore sale. That should be really fun, I guess, with the discounts really driving people into a shopping frenzy.

And the Singapore exploring began...

So I'm back from Singapore. It's been one good trip. Tiring, but very good. And I think all the walking in SG and Kuala Lumpur did me some good.

I arrived at Richie's place in Serangoon at 2AM. Mon and Rich waited for me to arrive, and it was great to see them both. We didn't get to chat much because Rich had work the following day.

As previously blogged, the first day in SG was spent with three good friends - Jean and Joi from Pahinungod and Lloyd whom I worked with in a project with Smart. They were patient enough to show me around, even though I'm sure they've seen the places a million times. Anyway, we went to all the mandatory must-see places in SG.

In the morning, it was Esplanade, Merlion Park, Raffles monument and Raffles Hotel, Old Parliament House, War Memorial Monument, and brunch at Lau Pa Sat. In the afternoon, we met up with Lloyd at Vivo City and went to Sentosa where we visited Palawan and Siloso Beaches. For dinner, we ate at the Food Republic in Vivo and then took the MRT to Clarke Quay. To cap the night, we went to Starbucks where we got Joi a muffin in lieu of a cake since it was her birthday the following day. Hehe!

For a first day, I think we've accomplished a lot. I didn't expect the weather to be really hot though, and I wish I could have worn something more comfortable. Oh well. Haha!

I've got about 500 plus photos from Singapore and 250 plus photos from KL. Haha! I think I'll just select my fave ones and then post them in an album later, hopefully.
