Nice cafe near the apartment...

With more free time this weekend, I found time to squeeze in a nice brunch.

There's a brunch cafe place a stone's throw away from my apartment. I'm kicking myself for visiting the cafe just now.

The cafe serves a wonderful breakfast, and most of all, it's pocket-friendly!

Waffles with strawberry preserve, omelette with toast, and a yum latte - total was about $15 only! So shiok!

Gotta love Bangkok!

Brunch, museum, dinner, angels...

My Saturday ended 30 minutes past twelve (and it was already a Sunday).

Today was another busy day. There was not much activity. It was more of a going from one place to another to either spend time with friends or to attend a prior commitment.

In the morning, I met up with Mon and I-van for brunch. The latter was flying back to Kuala Lumpur this afternoon. I didn't get to spend much time with him since I was also entertaining other friends. Thankfully, Mon messaged to invite to brunch at Wild Honey Scotts Square. It was good because I get to see I-van again before he flies out and also because I haven't been to Wild Honey in a while, and I miss brunch. Haha!

Hmm, I-van, technically, is not really a visitor anymore since his work trips to Singapore is getting more frequent. Hehe! But still, it's always a joy to see him. Back in Manila, my workplace was only a few buildings away from his. We would sometimes meet in the afternoon for coffee and a smoke (well, just him). In a way, it kind of feels like that again.

After brunch, we walked around a bit Scotts and Taka before parting ways. Mon needed to go do some errands. I-van had to head back to the hotel to get his luggage and head to the airport. I, on the other hand, had an appointment at the National Gallery.

I'm excited for the opening of the museum. Hmm, I'm done with the first of two papers. The next thing I need to work on is to prep for my assessment tour. It is scheduled for the end of September. I need to spend the next few weeks to prepare for that. At the same time, I have to start writing on my other tour paper, which is due end of October.

The activity with the museum ended by 330. My next appointment was around 5 or 6PM. Since I had to stay in town for the next appointment, I decided to just head to the National Library to do a bit of reading.

By 5, I left the library and took the bus to nearby Plaza Singapura. Grace, another ex-colleague, is in town for less than 24 hours. Of course, a meetup was necessary. I suggested that Grace, ex-colleague/SG noob Arlyn, and I meet at Tim Ho Wan for a light snack. It was only 5PM. Surely, the queue won't be long. I was right. THW was also a good choice because Grace has never tried the food at the restau.

For dinner, we went to Lau Pa Sat and had a feast - char kway teow, satay, dumpling soup, naan with different dips. Grace requested for hawker food. Lau Pa Sat was the quick solution. Hehe! Again, it was a good choice because Arlyn has never been to Lau Pa Sat. JoAnn then also joined us for dinner and chitchat. Thankfully, LPS was not extremely crowded. It also got cooler somehow so the four of us just decided to stay at LPS for chitchat and dessert.

The last time I saw Grace was when I left in 2011. Less than a year ago, she was assigned to Melbourne. This was definitely a reunion. I'm really glad that even though I'm no longer with Smart, I continue to be good friends with my ex-colleagues. Every time we see each other, the feeling is like we're still working together. Friendship with the PA girls is something I'm really grateful for.

We called it a night a little after 10. I was already very tired. I couldn't wait to take a shower. It was hot the entire day, and I was not wearing summer-friendly attire. Hehe!

Instead of heading home, I decided to swing by the National Museum first to catch the last performance of Garden of Angels by Theater Tol for the Singapore Night Festival. I was initially planning to catch the 9PM performance, but of course I had to choose hanging out with my ex-colleagues. Hehe!

Thankfully, there was an 11PM performance and thankfully, it will end not too late and I will still get to catch the train back to my place.

It was a good decision to go catch Garden of Angels, even if I was by myself. Haha! The performance was really enchanting and it was my first time to see an aerial performance like that.

I finally reached home before 1. I rested for a bit, showered and then before I knew it, I was already in lalaland. Haha!

Both tiring and relaxing Saturday so far...

It's been a tiring week, both because of work and my extra curricular activities.

This afternoon, I had some sort of break. By that, I mean I was able to stay at home and just take a nap for the past two hours. Haha!

Before that, I was already out of the house at 7AM and was in the city up until 2PM. My agenda this morning were museum volunteer training and brunch with PG Boy.

Museum training continues to be exciting and interesting. I definitely cannot wait for the opening of the museum later this year. At the same time, I'm a bit anxious because I have to write two papers before I become an official docent. Hehe!

After museum training, which thankfully finished on time, I walked over to the nearby Kith cafe. Since it was still before 12 noon, I didn't have to wait long to get a table for two.

It was good seeing PG Boy. The last time I saw him was during lunch with him, his best friend and Mon at a Peranakan place. I'm happy that things seem to be going okay with him and I'm happy to hear the updates about him, his fam and his circle of friends who I also know. Though there was a particular topic where he raised his voiced at me. Lol! It caught me by surprise. Lol!

Brunch with PG Boy was because I had to borrow a shirt for the birthday party I'm going to in a few hours. The birthday boy's favourite colour is green and he requested that people wear green. Hehe! More on that party tonight or tomorrow morning.

Brunch at Jewel Cafe + Bar...

Despite having a very long Saturday night, hitting the sack at 6:30AM Sunday morning, I still woke up about 10 in the morning.

From RKGreg's birthday gathering, I headed to Tipz's place just to freshen up a bit before heading to Changi Airport to fetch PG Boy. Thankfully, his flight was on time. Hehe! We didn't make any plans for me to fetch him. I decided I'd just go fetch him since I expected RKGreg's party to finish very late and it'll be easier to get to Changi from Tipz's place.

Major thanks to Tipz for letting me crash at his place! Will definitely miss City Sq once he moves next week.

Speaking of moving, Tipz and I agreed to meet up for brunch on Sunday morning since he was also already up so early (suprisingly! Hehe!). I knew PG Boy was too tired from his flight and would like to stay home and zzz, so brunch seemed like a good idea.

Also, there are a few cafes around Farrer Park worth visiting, which Tipz didn't know about. The heartlander had to be the one to tell him. Lol!

I gave him two options - one is L' Etoile, which I've been to during one of my brunch place adventures with PG Boy. The other one I suggested was Jewel Cafe + Bar, which I haven't checked out yet. Chye Seng Huat was also a possibility.

We settled for Jewel Cafe + Bar. I was expecting the place to be full since it was Sunday morning after all and it was almost noontime. I couldn't be more happier that we didn't have to queue as there was a table available. Woohoo!

Tipz and I reached just before the rest of the brunch crowd arrived.

I ordered the Eggs Benedict, while he ordered the Pancakes with Strawberry and Bananas and just shared.

The food was enjoyable. I still like the pancakes of eggs and berries, but I'm not complaining about this one.

Unfortunately, I didn't order a latte as I couldn't bring myself to pay $6 for it. Lol! Stupid me since it would cost more at CBTL and yet I'd pay for CBTL. I regretted my decision even more after reading that the beans are roasted in-house and they have an awesome Italian coffee machine or something. Haha! Oh well, that gives me a reason to go back.

After brunch, we headed back to City Square. I deided to tapau breakkie toast set from Toastbox for PG Boy since I thought he might be craving for it after a week of being away.

We'll definitely drop by Jewel Cafe again one of these days.

Tuesday night I had dinner with Tipz, Chris and MkSurf8.

Chris said Tipz invited to dinner. Tipz said Chris invited to dinner. Lol!

In any case, it's always nice seeing these guys. Ian was also invited but he was busy with work.

The dinner place was one of the cafes in the Bugis area.

I've heard of the place. One of my colleagues who also likes trying out new brunch places reco'd the place a long time ago.

The place shall not be named because I don't want the two to five people who read my blog (!!!) to have a bad impression of the place.

It is a good place. However, I feel that the food is quite overpriced. I got the eggs benny plate and it was $23. Add to that the 17% tax and you do the math. Haha!

I was telling another friend that maybe it's because the food pricing includes some sort of invisible "entrance fee" to the place.

After all, the cafe does have that very nice indie/arts vibe to it. There are several art pieces on display and some are for sale. Add to that the fact that the wait staff are friendly/attentive.

Other than the pricing, it is a place worth going to. But then again, I don't plan to say the name of the cafe. Haha!

I have to admit. Making the journey to the city on a work night is somewhat of a challenge for me. I get a bit lazy and if it were up to me, I'd like to be zzz-ing by 1130. Haha! Old age, you think? Hehe!

90% of the time, the spirit triumphs over the body (or is it the body over the spirit? Haha!) and I do make the journey. I dun get to see the guys that often so every opportunity must be seized. Haha!

Very happy Tuesday night it was. =)

Sunday brunch at The Loft...

After hearing the 930AM Mass at the church nearest to PG Boy's place, I headed to Chinatown to meet up with Chris and MkSurf8 for brunch.

MkSurf8 joined the SAFRA Army Half Marathon earlier and he asked if any of us would like to go for brunch. Ian also went for the run and we invited him to brunch as well but he was too tired and sleepy. Tipz, on the other hand, already made plans.

So, it was just the usual suspects - MkSurf8, Chris and me. Hehe!

MkSurf8 suggested we all go to The Loft at Smith St. It seems like it's the one that's central to all of us. Plus, I've never tried out the place though I've seen it a couple of times when I was in Chinatown.

I dunno if it was because it was a Sunday and there was a run, or because Smith St. was closed to traffic or if it was about to rain, but there was no queue at the cafe. That never happens!!! Hehe!

MkSurf8 and Chris were already comfortably seated by the window by the time I arrived. It was hard to believe that there was no queue and that the place wasn't packed at all. I wonder if it's always like that.

Anyway, I actually enjoyed the food. I ordered the Farmer's Omelette and I was happy with it. I particularly liked the toast. Hehe! I wonder how they made it taste that way.

Since the place wasn't crowded, the three of us were able to stay and hang out for a few hours and just talked and talked and talked. It was really good! I haven't been able to hang out with the guys lately so I'm really glad we got to do the brunch.

Brunch at Eggs & Berries...

As much as I like having the usual traditional breakkie set at the food store across PG Boy's place, I still crave for something different on certain weekends.

That's why last Sunday, I suggested to a sleepy PG Boy that we head to Changi City Point instead to have brunch at Eggs & Berries.

Luckily, City Point was not crowded yet and we didn't have to wait to get a table at the restau.

I'm not sure if there's any other brunch place in the East that serves nice brunch sets. Hmm, the other closest brunch place to Tampines I can think of is already in Farrer Park. Hehe!

Anyway, what's good about Eggs & Berries is that the brunch plate is quite affordable/reasonable. Excluding the coffee, the brunch plate set which includes the three pieces of mini butter pancakes is about $15. Not bad, yeah?

Will definitely be back again soon.

Brunch with the bros (Lol)...

Met up with Chris, Ian and MkSurf8 last Saturday for brunch.

MkSurf8 suggested that we have a brunch to celebrate Ian's bday as well as to welcome 2013. And if it's MkSurf8 who calls for a get-together, you dun say no to Madame. Hehe! Kidding.

As always, it was great seeing these three guys especially since we all had our own New Year celeb. Ian was in Shanghai for New Year. MkSurf8 was in HK with the folks. Chris was in Upper Boon Keng. Hehe!

We agreed to meet at Robertson Walk and decide there where to go for brunch.

Initially, we thought of going to Kitchen + Bar by the Merry Men or Bar Bar Black Sheep but I think neither were open yet.

em by the river was suggested since it's also a great brunch place.

However, we decided to try something new so we settled for Toby's Estate.

If you want good coffee, you'll definitely want to head down to this place. It's definitely one of the best coffee places in town.

As for the food, I did enjoy the brunch that I have. Most of the brunch plates are below $20, which is quite great.

I ordered the croissant with scrambled eggs and espresso maple bacon, which was just $10. I ordered extra sides of sauteed mixed mushrooms and honey baked ham, which together cost $5.

When my plate arrived, I was pleasantly surprised because it was quite a big serving, even for me.
Oh, one thing I like about the place was that they were okay with replacing the croissant with two pieces of brioche. (Or maybe because they already ran out of croissant and had no choice. Hehe!)

Chris and Ian had the Peasant Eggs with some add-ons. MkSurf8 had Toby's Breakfast.

I dunno about the guys, but I did enjoy my breakfast. I definitely also enjoyed the Latte. It was good and I wouldn't mind having a second cup... errr... glass.

Coffee afternoon at Chye Seng Huat Hardware...

PG Boy and I finally got to go to Chye Seng Huat Hardware to see what all the fuss was about.

I've been seeing the cafe in a number of blogs recently so naturally, I was curious to go and check out the place.

The cafe is very near where PG Boy used to stay. It's a very short walk from Lavender MRT. After grabbing lunch from the Thai foodstall from the kopitiam at the corner of Tyrwhitt Rd and Horne Rd, we made our way to Chye Seng Huat Hardware.

Despite being a lazy Sunday early afternoon, the place was kinda full. We still managed to get a place though so yay! :)

Prior to going, I read somewhere that the breakkie/brunch stuff weren't that spectacular. My bad for quickly believing. When I saw the brunch plates coming out of the kitchen, I actually thought the food seems worth a try. Note to self: next time, try the food yourself. Don't rely on reviews too much. Hehe!

I did like the coffee very much. I ordered the hand-brewed - Balanced. I liked it so much I had two cups. Haha! More than that, I also loved the interiors of the place. It was well done. I guess the charm of the place starts right even before you enter. The people behind the cafe retained the facade of the hardware store that it used to be (??). This gave the place its own character. Hehe!

I also like that there is a shop just above the cafe that sheels nice bags and other quirky items. Do check out the Tyrwhitt General Company store for the pieces.

Meanwhile, PG Boy was looking around every bit of detail of the cafe while he enjoyed his latte. He liked the interiors very much. Plus, he was very impressed with how the baristas handled the coffee. They really knew what they were doing.

It was definitely an enjoyable early Sunday afternoon hohol.

Must definitely go back to try the brunch and the pastries.

Brunch at Batter Fluffy Flaps in Katong...

With nothing planned this morning, Pg Boy and I decided to head down to Katong area to try out one of the brunch places in the area.

Katong is not really the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of brunch. That just might change. Among with the several food places found outside of i12 Katong mall, there are three possible brunch places for people living on this side of the island.

Pg Boy was suggesting we check out Robolots. I, on the other hand, suggested Batter Fluffy Flaps. While we were walking along Joo Chiat, we noticed that Awfully Chocolate/Mooshi Bakes now also offers brunch. Nice.

We first went to Robolots at to check out the menu. When we got there, the place had just opened for the day. We saw some of the staff still prepping the tables. The menu looked interesting though.

So, we agreed to give it a try on another occasion and try Batter Fluffy Flaps today.

Batter Fluffy Flaps or BFF is a stone's throw away from Robolots and from i12 Katong.

When we got to the place, it wasn't crowded at all. Some tables were occupied but it wasn't very busy yet. I dunno if it's because the place is relatively new or like I said earlier, Katong has yet to be thought of as a brunch place.

Pg Boy and I were able to get a table very quickly. Ordering food wasn't difficult as well. The first thing I would usually look at is the brunch combo. Almost always, I would already be good with it.

The Breakfast Mambo Combo comes with one ham, two bacon strips, two poached egg, two Chipolata sausages, a small portion of greens and cherry tomatoes, and two pancakes. It's $14.

There's a note that prep time takes about 15 minutes. However, since we were there early and since it wasn't packed, the order came in less than 15 minutes.

I thought the food was quite okay. For $14, it wasn't bad. The pancakes were nice. You can get ask for as much syrup as you want. LOL! Two pancakes were enough to go with everything else.

As you can see, there are other dishes on the menu that may be worth trying. In the evening, I think the place also serves some light alcohol to cater to the evening crowd. Hehe!

The best part about the place? All Day Pancakes.

Must go back again to try other dishes.

Brunch at Café Antonio...

It was a typical Sunday morning.

Despite having gone to bed quite late, I still found myself awake at seven in the morning. Part of me thinks it sucks, because I definitely would like to sleep more. Part of me thinks it's great, because I get to do more things for the day.

On the other hand, Pg Boy still lay in bed sleeping like a baby. He always teases me for waking up very early. I always tease him for waking up much later than I do.

The different thing about this weekend was that we were in my room at my side of the island. After the trip to JB yesterday, I actually thought we would be heading back to the East after dindin last night. Pg Boy showed no signs of wanting to make the long travel. I was more than happy because a weekend like this rarely happens. Hehe!

Back to Sunday morning, I've mentioned in some of my previous blog posts that one of the things I look forward to on Sunday mornings is brunch.

So does Pg Boy. It's one of the things we share is late brunch, plus always wanting to try out new food places.

A few clicks on my Mac, and I was brought to the homepage of some of the brunch places in the Western side of the island. There were quite a few places I wanted to try and I thought this Sunday could be just right to do that.

I read more about the restaus. After reading not so good revs about option A, and after seeing how ridiculously priced option B was, the idea to just make the breakkie myself popped up.

Making a list in my mind of the things I wanted to prep, I rushed out of the house and headed to the grocery next door.

This is one of the things I love about my place. Ulu it may be (LOL), I'm still lucky to have found a home which is right next door to everything - grocery, QB house, Filipino food stall, 7-11, MRT station, Toast Box!!! Really, I would have to think several times before I move.

Anyway, I was glad that the grocery wasn't that packed yet. I grabbed the things that I needed, paid at the cashier and made my way back. I did a quick side trip to Toast Box to get Pg Boy's kopi and to get my kopi si.

Then, it was time to turn on the stove and get things going. Breakkie was certainly very easy to make. Thankfully, I think my landlord is also AJ so his kitchen is kinda complete with the pans and utensils needed. Hehe!

The breakkie turned out great. I'm glad that I still haven't lost whatever culinary skills I have stemming from my Kapampangan lineage. Pg Boy enjoyed it. I enjoyed it. I liked the conversation we had while enjoying breakkie. 

The best part? Probably when Pg Boy said, "I have to say you make a good breakfast."

This is what good Sunday mornings are made of, right?

A brunch place "star" in Farrer Park..

These past couple of months, it has sort of been a weekly mission to try different brunch places/cafes around the island.

The good thing about being here is that the country is quite tiny, so if one really wants to, one wouldn't mind travelling to other parts of the island. (I think the bigger challenge for most is getting up at 10AM on a lazy Sunday morning. Hehe!)

Yesterday, I dragged Pg Boy to Farrer Park so we can try the French-themed Japanese cafe L'etoile.

Farrer Park being so close to Little India, it's easy to assume that most dining places in the area would only be offering rich and delight ful South Asian cuisine.

Surprise, surprise, because you will find L'etoile in the neighborhood.

House in a two-storey shophouse at the corner of OWen Road and Dorset Road, one of the easiest ways to reach L'etoile is to take the Purple Line of the MRT and alight at Farrer Park station. Take Ext D which leads to Owen Road. The cafe is just a few minutes walk.

L'etoile is star in French, and I think it's quite an apt name for this new rising star, a French-themed Japanese café housed in a two-storey shophouse at the junction of Owen Road and Dorset Road. As it was the owner's intent to settle on an off-the-beaten track (read: ulu) location, having a GPS device with you on the first visit here is highly advisible.

When we arrived, it was just nearing 12noon. While most of the tables have already been occupied by fellow Sunday brunch people, Pg Boy and I managed to get a table at the second storey.

Whereas the first floor looks like a typical counter at a cafe, the second floor of the cafe is where the character and charm of L'etoile really is. One will find a mix of new and vintage items - an old Singer sewing machine (used as a table for two!), bookshelves with a mix of Western and Asian titles, crystalware, souvenirs from travels abroad. Certain sections of the wall have been painted playfully to make the place more memorable to the hungry soul. Hehe!

There were quite a number of things to order from the menu. Since it was brunch we came from, it was brunch that we ordered. The Big Breakfast ($14.90) consists of two bacon strips, two sausages, buttered toast, mushrooms, a side salad, and eggs cooked according to how you like it. Eggs Benedict was also on the menu, but Pg Boy did not see it. Hehe! We also ordered orange juice and a latte to go with the meal.

What was sort of a minor challenge was ordering. The friendly, kind lady who took our orders had a little difficulty speaking English. It even became more amusing because Pg Boy also struggled conversing with her in Mandarin, since he's not very fluent in Mandarin. Hehe! But thankfully, we managed and the food arrived after a few minutes of waiting.

For just $14.90, I must say that the brunch plate was quite filling. (Pg Boy and I, however, asked for some extra toasts because we were starving. LOL! I dun remember if they charged us for it though.)

Quite stuffed from brunch, I decided I'll try the pastries and homemade cakes some other time. After reading that the sweets are prepared by pastry chefs who trained at Le Cordon Bleu, that definitely gives me more reason to go back.

On my next visit to L' etoile, I'll make I'll bring a book with me as well. I can already picture myself just lounging on one of the comfy couches, reading a book (from a Kindle? hehe!), and enjoying the cakes and coffee.

Strictly Pancakes...

Netherlands-based friend Bernice was in town over the weekend for a business trip.

We agreed to meet up for brunch last Saturday.

I was undecided where to bring her. It was either a place that was familiar to me or something that I've yet to try.

Initially, I was thinking of em by the River. To me, it is one of the best brunch places in Singapore. The food is good. The venue is nice. And I think it's one of those places tourists won't know about unless they have a local friend.

However, after learning Bernice's schedule for the afternoon, I decided that we have to go somewher that's more accessible.

Hence, I chose to bring her to Strictly Pancakes.

It's been on my must-try brunch places, and the weekend brunch plans with Bernice was the perfect opportunity to head down to Prinsep St.

As much as I love my kaya peanut toast and kopi si from Toastbox, there are still weekends when I want to have pancakes for breakkie.

Because my weekend home is quite far from the city, my quick fix for pancake craving is MickeyD's. Haha!

Anyway, I got the All-American Breakfast - three fluffy and thick pancakes, bacon strips, two sausages, a quail egg sunny side-up and grilled tomato. For $14, it came with a choice of either chilled coffee or Long Black coffee.

Bernice, on the other hand, ordered the Eggs-A-Way! Two eggs cooked according to how you want it, accompanied by a side dish of back pepper mushrooms, grilled tomato and choice of drink.

The pancakes were quite delicious. Since they were thick and fluffy, you can actually just order one plate (to be shared by two people) and then just add other side dishes.

There are other interesting things on the menu left to be tried.

Definitely want to go back.

Brunch at Paul in Ngee Ann...

Where another cafe used to be right next to Kinokuniya (I can't remember if it was TCC) in Ngee Ann now serves as the home of Paul Maison De Qualité 1889.

Paul is a French bakery restaurant that recently opened in Singapore. From what I've read, the place is quite popular in countries where it has branches.

The last time I headed down to Ngee Ann, I noticed that there was a new restau. I was quickly intrigued by the new place upon seeing from afar that 1.) the interiors looked very nice, 2.) the place was packed (a good indicator that it's a must-try), and 3.) there was a queue just outside the dining place. 

Last Sunday, I got all excited when Pg Boy told me that the birthday brunch for their friend Alynn was going to be at Paul. Orchard on a Sunday is a bad idea, but I thought that it should be okay since we were going to be there early.

Our small group of four met up at Paul around 1130. Pg Boy didn't have to wait that long to get a table, I think. (I say I think because I went around to buy some stuff for Moms Day.) Our table was very near the bakery of the cafe, which gave us a good view of all the baked goodies. I was more excited about the breads rather than the brunch menu. Hehe!

Anyway, I ordered the Crepe Complete - turkey and cheese in a pancake topped with a fried egg. It also came with a small portion of greens. Alynn had something similar but with mushrooms. Ho had roasted chicken. Pg Boy had one of the croques.

For dessert, we got a fruit tart, a lemon tart, Napoleon, and macarons. I must say that I enjoyed dessert more. While the crepe tasted nice, I would have added a few more dollars to what I paid and I could have had a bigger brunch plate at one of the other brunch places around the island. The desserts (and most probably the breads) would be the main reason to head to Paul. 

Just beside the restau, the bakery would be found. The few hours we sat there, there wasn't a moment where there was no customer buying baked goodies. Really nice. 

What Paul can improve on is the service. It's kind of challenging to get the attention of the wait staff. Sure, the place was packed but that has never been an acceptable excuse for me. 

Nevertheless, I think I will go back to Paul to try the mains or if I happen to be in the area, and I'm craving for some nice pastries or freshly baked bread.
